Psychodynamic Psychotherapist based in Godalming
Welcome to my website. I am an experienced BACP registered psychotherapist & counsellor practicing in and around Godalming & Guildford in Surrey. I see people weekly on a short, medium-term and open-ended basis, both privately and for the NHS through IAPT services.
The therapy that I offer provides the space and opportunity to work and explore at your own pace, to feel understood, to work through dilemmas and complex issues, to come to understand and accept yourself and to find ways to overcome unhelpful, habitual patterns. In order to be helped, I believe that people need to feel safe, truly listened to and accepted without judgement or prejudice, but also we all need to be challenged from time to time. Therapy is a serious matter and can be difficult, sometimes painful, and it can take us to places we are fearful of but it can also be a time of discovery, creativity and often a truly enjoyable process.
I primarily work psychodynamically but I stay open to and interested in other forms of therapy, attending new trainings regularly. I have a particular interest in mindfulness stemming from a long personal history of teaching and practicing meditation and yoga. As a Psychotherapist I have experience with:
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a therapeutic process that can help you to understand and resolve problems by increasing awareness of the inner world and its influence over relationships both past and present. This process can take time as often the issues that bring you to therapy have developed over a long period of your life. Meeting weekly (occasionally twice weekly) we look at what has brought you to therapy at this time and perhaps the part you play in things going right or wrong for you. We will explore what has happened in the past and how this effects how you think, feel and behave and, just as these patterns influence your everyday relationships, we will come to see how they also play out in the therapeutic relationship with me. The quality of our relationship is very important as often it is here that provides the opportunity or catalyst for change.
Complimenting this, mindfulness is a practice that helps you to find a perspective and a distance from patterns of thinking that, unchecked, may have caused you problems for many years. With an increasingly strong evidence base it has been shown to be particularly affective in helping with anxiety, chronic pain and depression. Recent studies have shown that mindfulness practice, over time, can significantly and positively alter the structure of the brain.
