I am an experienced BACP registered psychotherapist & counsellor who works privately with individual adults for short or long-term psychotherapy in Godalming & Guildford, Surrey. Talking it through with someone professionally trained, in a calm, safe and confidential space, has been proven to help you live a more fulfilled and balanced life. We all have periods of life that are distressing but occasionally these become too much for us to bear alone. This is when seeing a psychotherapist can be so beneficial as it provides an opportunity to explore whatever troubles you, be it a major life trauma such as bereavement or something that happened in childhood, a long-term problem such as addiction or an eating disorder, or something you can’t quite put a finger on - a nagging feeling that something just isn’t right. Whatever it is, if it is affecting the quality of your life and undermining your hopes and aspirations then, making time for yourself to try to understand and change these concerns is one of the most important decisions you can make. Taking that first step to see a counsellor often takes great courage but if you're suffering, perhaps it's time to take that step.
I primarily use psychodynamic psychotherapy however I have considerable training in other techniques, particularly CBT and Mindfulness, which I can draw upon. I have experience with:
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a talking therapy which takes into account your life as a whole, looking at your current circumstances as well as at past and present relationships and events. Through talking, listening and reflecting, links, often unconscious at first, can be made that provide insight and help you to increase your awareness of your self and to understanding why you feel or perhaps act in a certain way. An important aspect of this therapy is the relationship between client and therapist as experiences in the consulting room often reflect those in the rest of your life. This process can take time as often the issues that bring you to therapy have developed over a long period of your life but with space you can come to understanding, and further to changing, often complex and deep emotional and relational problems.
Mindfulness is a simple practice that helps you to find a perspective and a distance from thoughts, feelings and behaviours that, unchecked, may have caused you problems for many years. Combined with the above approach mindfulness will give you the tools to manage anxiety as well as helping to reduce the seemingly constant need for more in everything we do.
